Surrounded by credibly hilarious scenarios, amazing story, and breathtaking art, MC is a police officer. She is accused of a crime, and sent to prison in her split world. There she finds the things she knew in life were not quite so simple. The story splits into two branches early on, one follows the bodyguard route, and the other is the prisoner route. Each of those can fork further down the road, as long as you survive that long. The final (servant) route unlocks in one of the others’ bad routes, which was an evil touch, if you ask me.
Speaking of evil, but cool, there are also crossover endings. It is possible to get an extra ending for one guy in his counterpart’s storyline, but it is generally bittersweet. The plot was fantastic, deep, enticing, and well developed. A few small things did bother me, but in the interest of spoilers, I won’t elaborate. The grand finale, unlocked after finishing the other storylines, felt a bit forced. It tried really hard to bring all 5 guys together, who otherwise would have struggled to be in the same room simultaneously, or at least unlikely to be so. But it was amusing to see them interact, and a fitting end for a good story.
Actual character preferences aside, Eltcreed’s storyline accentuates the ridiculous eccentricity of his character in the most fantastic fashion. From the start, I referred to him as “creepy dude” in my head, nevertheless I giggled like an idiot throughout the majority of the story – and 100% agreed with Ulrik, all the time. Many of the character dynamics were fantastic. Seeing Adage and Ines meet Yune nearly killed me, I laughed so hard. But honestly, I haven’t read many novels where I liked every single male character option, so this entire game was a nice treat. There is a newer version downloadable on steam where Fin is an option, also - and the new switch version from Japan (that has English translation, mind you!) has him as well. While he’s not my style, I’m glad to know this and will one day play his route. Poor man deserves a chance after all he has been through.
