Psycho-Pass takes place in a futuristic version of Japan that has essentially become one big, nearly crime-free surveillance state. The AI Sybil keeps a watchful eye over the country, and citizens are subjected to regular brain scans to measure their emotional state. The Public Safety Bureau is this world’s version of a police force, trying to stop criminal acts before they actually happen. The force consists of two types of investigators: inspectors, and enforcers, a group of “latent criminals” who serve as their subordinates. As the MC, there is a chance to be one of either, trying to solve different cases in this particular system. Without knowing this background, the game starts a bit rough, and it took me a while to catch on to what is going on. Learning about emotional hue colors (affected by personal choices) also took a while.

While this game takes the form of a mystery, I did not feel very involved solving anything. Which doesn’t say much, most visual novels somehow take that away, but this one seemed particularly focused more on the personal happiness hue and the personal choices. That being said, the underlying current of what needs to be discovered is probably deep enough to let that go, and the story itself was well done. However, I think the overall cyberpunk theme did not really draw me in, therefore the game itself did not leave much of an impression on me, even though it was my first non otome visual novel. Yet, when I think back on it, I think fondly of the relationships built and the overall feel of the game.
