Mystic Messenger was a mobile game I found through sheer dumb luck. I saw someone make a gif comment on someone else’s timeline on facebook, of Zen, and I knew just by looking at the picture, that it had to be an otome. I reverse image searched it and found out about MM. A brilliant game design, as it creates a situation where MC is forced to live her life in a chat room full of strangers, and over time learn about who those people are and what darkness looms among them. The story eventually splits based on favor gained among the people in the chatroom, and new elements come to light.

I cannot stress how ingenious it was to have a chat room to access from my phone, and at every log in there’s different “people” on it, who sometimes send selfies and cute personalized emoticons. There’s the invitation mini game that immerses one in the core purpose activity of this small party and even phone calls with fully voiced actors, and later on, “out of chat” scenes to round out the story. Best part, no ticketing systems!! Granted, it is a money pit if all storylines are explored (and yes...I did...do that…) but I ended up ordering the VIP boxes. Hourglasses AND physical items, yeah!!! Thus I didn’t feel so bad to spend the money. The story was incredible, well planned out, had a lot of deep elements and crushing trauma (no, seriously, V and Unknown’s story in particular tore my psyche to shreds). It’s harder still because when I finished, neither of them had their epilogue that ties up the loose ends. V’s has since then launched, but they still need to finish Unknown. Come on Cheritz!! Either way, best mobile otome, no contest!
